Midwest and death metal aren’t usually synonymous, especially when the aforementioned death metal is a pummeling maelstrom of chaos and intensity that you would expect from bands that emerged from the Florida, Bay area, and east coast metal scenes of the late eighties and early nineties. Characterized by the heavily distorted down-tuned guitars, fiercely guttural vocals, and machine gun drumming, Summon the Destroyer is truly American Death Metal at its finest. If you’ve managed to sleep on this one, it’s definitely time to wake up and smell the bloodshed. Hailing from the great city of Indianapolis, death metal quintet Summon the Destroyer formed in mid-2007 when guitarist Ryan Green’s former group (Amongst the Swarm) disbanded leaving him with an unused arsenal of punishing riffs. Green then enlisted the help of long time friend and drummer Mike Grow, who he knew shared his passion for brutal death metal. Together the two of them began rehearsing and searching for additional members to complete the lineup. Their search led them to ex-Ishia bassist Corey Clark. Clark helped solidify the lineup, completing the rhythm section and bringing an unrivaled energy and stage presence to the bands live show. The next addition would be that of guitarist Mike Morgan. Morgan has the chops of a seasoned veteran, bringing masterful solos, and a well needed balance and fresh outlook to the band’s writing process. The last and final addition to the lineup was that of vocalist and lyrical madman Nate “Angelcrusher” Bracey. Bracey shatters any and all misconceptions by integrating intelligence with inhuman savagery to express his discordance for organized religion. What began as a couple of metal heads having a good time playing brutal music in a garage, turned into five of Indianapolis’ finest annihilating everything, and everyone in its path. The annihilation continued with the 2008 release of the bands monstrous debut EP “In Reverence to Sin” which was met with fanatical response. The band plans to shop the EP around hoping to secure a label, but isn’t taking any time off. A new full length album is in the works, and plans for upcoming tours are being finalized.
